With little on the agenda in terms of international travel, many are turning to local destinations for their next jaunt. For many Aucklanders that means a hop on the ferry to the beloved Waiheke Island.
With that said, we thought we'd pick the brain of an island local and the friendly face behind Betty's Cart, Fran Muirhead on her favourites. Enjoy.
Why Waiheke?
I spent a lot of time in Akaroa growing up, and my partner Ben is from Mount Maunganui, so we both feel really drawn to small, seaside villages – and being surrounded by nature. I like the feeling of being part of a community too, especially one as quirky as Waiheke.
Best Place to stay?
If you're on a budget, the Waiheke Backpackers has one of the best views in the world I reckon. If you're throwing down some cash Delamore Lodge is pretty lush!
Best place for live music?
Found in Surfdale often has great DJs in the weekends or Aperitivo – a tiny wine bar in Oneroa for a bit more of a low key jazz vibe.
Best Restaurant?
We have so many great restaurants. Mudbrick's Archive restaurant for brunch & Bloody Mary's. Poderi Crisci's Italian long lunch for a special occasion with close friends. Casita Miro for dinner – epic Spanish food in a gorgeous setting (ambiance & service always spot on). Finish dinner off with a taste of their famous fortified wine, Madame Rouge.
Best Bar?
Alibi Brewery, underneath Tantalus for drinks & snacks.
Best place to shop?
The best retail spot is by far Greatest Friend – it's a rad vintage shop and event space in Oneroa.
Best place to escape the tourists?
The local bowls club or a hike around the headlands walking track.
