MEET AUGUST: ATOMIC'S HEAD ROASTER & NZ'S 2025 CUP TASTERS CHAMPION

Congratulations!! How does it feel to be the NZ Cup Tasters Champion?
It feels pretty surreal to be honest. I went into the competition this year just ready to do my best and have fun without putting so much emotional pressure on myself to win like I have done in the past. I am just really proud of myself.
For those who may not be familiar with the concept, can you briefly explain what the Cup Tasters competition consists in?
Its a game of taste, its a game of the mind, its a game of accuracy and speed". In eight sets of three cups of brewed coffee competitors must identify the odd cup out.

You’ve entered 3 times and came pretty close to winning once. How did you prepare for this edition?
I really tried to focus on my rhythm and actual slurping technique, maintaining a steady pace to help stay calm. Sounds cheesy but just believing in myself and my abilities, not worrying about what other people are doing.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Cupping new coffees for purchase! Every cupping is an opportunity to expand my pallet.
How does your role as Head Roaster influence your abilities as a taster?
As the head roaster I have to be hyper critical in tasting to maintain high standards for quality, this keeps my brain churning on the cupping table without too much effort.
And how do your tasting skills contribute to your role as Head Roaster?
Like I mentioned previously, my hyper critical mind keeps my standards high. Being able to pick out subtle differences between cups really helps to inform the direction in which I take a roast profile to achieve the best reflection of each coffee.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to improve their tasting abilities?
Drink more coffee!!! And not just coffees you typically like, keep exploring the spectrum of specialty coffee. A great pallet is built from experience.
The location of the Worlds Cup Tasters, where you will be representing New Zealand in 2026, hasn’t been released yet. It looks like a toss up between Bangkok, Brussels and Panama City. Where would you rather go?
Brussels, It is in the heart of Europe! Maybe not the easiest destination to travel to for a competition seeing as it is on the complete opposite side of the world but it looks like such a beautiful city. Plus I would love to visit family and friends in the Netherlands which is just a train ride away.
